Asthma Right Care - October 2023 update

18 Oct 2023

The Asthma Right Care movement continues to develop across the world, and we are delighted to share the following updates from the last meeting of our Delivery Team.

Education

The Teach the Teacher programme continues to roll out, with a new cohort of 24 professionals having completed their Tier 2 training in Brazil. A total of 248 professionals have enrolled in Tier 3 training to date in Brazil, with an additional 150 expected to attend in new sessions taking place this month.

In North Macedonia, following Tier 1 teaching in May, a Tier 2 event for  11 pharmacists from different towns has now taken place. They are now preparing for a 1-day regional workshop across 12-15 towns with an expected 400 primary care pharmacists attending. The group also announced plans to organise ‘walk and talk about asthma’ sessions, with pensioners taught correct inhaler technique and taken on a walking tour to further discuss their asthma. Furthermore, a new peak flow meter project and new workshops focusing on earlier diagnosis of asthma are currently in planning stages.

Teach the Teacher tier 3 workshops have now been held in 7 additional regions of Spain, and the group looks forward to the 1st Spanish Asthma Right Care Conference on 1 November. The Spanish group is also preparing to launch an Asthma Right Care program targeted at children.

Our Tunisian group has recently launched its lexicon and its SOAP project with pharmacies  - find out more here.

Our group in Bangladesh has teaching Asthma Right Care in the local context to grow and energise the movement. Meanwhile, our Malaysian colleagues held a well-received spirometry workshop for 30 participants.

Materials

Our Asthma Slide Rules have now been adapted into Brazilian Portuguese in time for distribution to 4000 pharmacists at the XXII Congress of the Pharmaceutical Society of Sāo Paolo!

The Reliever Reliance Test is being translated into Tunisian Arabic and Malay, and we now have Spanish subtitles available for several new videos (1, 2, 3, 4).

Research

As our movement prepares to expand, our groups are evaluating the impact of their activities so far.

The Delivery Team is testing the use of a social movement evaluation tool developed by Global Fund for Women.

Our colleagues in Bangladesh are preparing case reports on the impact Asthma Right Care has had so far, while our Greek group is working hard on the publication of a paper on the implementation of the Reliever Reliance Test. Slovenia is beginning to develop its 2024 educational plan by conducting a survey on the awareness of the burden of oral glucocorticoids in asthma treatment.  This will complement our own research due to launch shortly on the global use of systemic steroids in asthma and COPD management.
