Teach the Teacher Tier 3: Dominican Republic

April-June 2025
Dominican Republic

The Tier 3 Teach the Teacher workshop ‘Asthma Management in Primary Care’ was delivered in the Dominican Republic across six cohorts between April and June 2025, teaching practical and theoretical approaches and addressing topics ranging from an introduction to asthma to non-pharmacological treatment and management.

The programme aimed to provide primary care professionals with the skills they need to effectively manage asthma in their patients, including:

  • Identifying the criteria necessary for diagnosing asthma in primary care and applying them to clinical cases
  • Describing the different types of medications used in the treatment of asthma and selecting the most appropriate therapeutic option for each patient
  • Developing skills in patient education on the correct use of medications and the importance of follow-up

A total of 151 health professionals participated in the training, including primary care physicians, nurses and health promoters.

Pre- and post-workshop evaluations indicate an average 38.3% improvement in knowledge of asthma management, and over 90% of participants were satisfied with the workshop and would recommend it to others.

The organisers of the workshop will now implement follow-up sessions to evaluate the application of what was learned and will conduct periodic evaluations to measure the long-term impact of this teaching in primary care.
