Are nurses proactive about minimising their exposure to second hand tobacco smoke (SHS) when visiting respiratory patients at home?, Nicola Roberts, UK

Background: Exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke (SHS) has reduced significantly, driven by restrictions on smoking in public places, and a shift in social norms. However nurses are still frequently exposed to tobacco SHS. This study explores nurses’ recent SHS experiences. Methods: An interim analysis of an online survey was undertaken, consisting of open/ closed questions to explore exposure to SHS and views, disseminated via professional respiratory organisations and social media in early 2024.Results: 25 survey responses were reviewed, responses were UK wide. Participants were predominately; female (92.0%), > NHS Band 7 (64.0%), worked fulltime (80.0%), aged >45 years (64.0%). Most were never smokers (64.0%). Most (68.0%) had either community or part-community role. Home visits generally lasted between15-60 minutes, 64% reported that in the last week they had visited a home where someone had smoked during/prior to a home visit. 40% reported exposure to SHS >1-2 times per week. Forty four percent reported regularly/occasionally experiencing respiratory symptoms during or after a visit, none sought medical advice. 64% reported that they had no agreement in place with their patients to provide a smoke free environment. 72% reported that they were unaware of any employer policies about tobacco SHS.Conclusions: This interim analysis explores nurses behaviour around creating smoke free environments in patients’ homes. Often experiencing respiratory symptoms nurses did not obtain medical support and are largely unaware of relevant workplace policies. Staff education and monitoring is needed to protect the health of nurses.
