Epidemiological data of the in-home Covid-19 vaccination program for vulnerable populations by a Primary Health Care Center in Athens

01 Apr 2024
Introduction: Covid-19 vaccination both of healthy adults and individuals with comorbidity is a way to control the spread of coronavirus disease. The objective of this study is to evaluate the importance of Covid-19 vaccines associated with an in-home Covid-19 vaccination program. Method: A descriptive epidemiological study conducted in Zografou Primary Health Care Center in Athens, Greece (08/03/2021-16/10/2023). Data reported by vaccine recipients of the in-home Covid-19 vaccination program were analyzed. Results: A total of 1388 vaccinations carried out while 813 citizens vaccinated. The median age of vaccine recipients was 89 ± SD 5.0 years. The oldest vaccine recipient was 108 years old. Of those with non-missing data, more than half of them were female (72,17%). The minority of vaccine recipients (16,26%) had at least one positive coronavirus test in their lifetime. 303 citizens were fully vaccinated. Slightly more than half of them vaccinated with Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. 24,13% of vaccinations refer to first doses, 12,82% to second doses and 63,04% to boosters. 23,52% of vaccine recipients vaccinated with at least one booster dose. Most of first and second booster doses carried out with monovalent Pfizer vaccine (82,34%, 52,84%) while the majority of third booster doses with bivalent Pfizer vaccine (97,90%). Only 8,8% of booster doses concerned to Pfizer BA.1 and Johnson vaccines. The left upper limb was the dominant limb of vaccination. At least one consent representative was present at most vaccinations. Discussion: Covid-19 vaccination has been effective in the effort to minimize the transition and the burden of coronavirus disease. However, elderly, and high-risk populations are more likely to face barriers that can limit their access to healthcare resources. This in-home Covid-19 vaccination program aimed to serve vulnerable populations. In total, 303 individuals were fully vaccinated which is an indicator of success.
