Empowering Voices in Chronic Respiratory Disease Management through Photovoice in Rural Indian Communities

01 Apr 2024
Background: Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) significantly impact the quality of life in Indian communities, yet there is a gap in understanding these impacts from a community perspective. Traditional research methods often miss the experiences and perceptions of those living with CRDs. This study employs the Photovoice method, a participatory research tool, to bridge this gap, enhancing understanding of community perceptions and experiences of CRDs. Research Question(s): How can the Photovoice method enhance our understanding of community perceptions and experiences of chronic respiratory diseases in rural settings? How can this understanding inform policy and practice? Methods: The study adopts a qualitative approach using the Photovoice method. Participants from rural communities, affected by CRDs, will be provided with cameras to capture images reflecting their daily experiences with the disease. This visual narrative aims to explore their knowledge, perceptions, and the socio-cultural environment surrounding CRDs. Following the photographic documentation, small group discussions will be organized to facilitate deeper insights into the experiences captured in the photographs. These discussions will not only provide a platform for participants to voice their concerns and experiences but also serve as a means to collect qualitative data for analysis. Discussion Points: The study will focus on discussing the effectiveness of Photovoice in capturing the lived experiences of people with CRDs, its role in fostering community engagement and empowerment, and its potential to influence policy-making at the state and national levels. Anticipated Outcomes: The study anticipates revealing in-depth, community-based insights into the lived experiences of individuals with CRDs. The study aims to demonstrate the utility of Photovoice in engaging communities in health research, potentially influencing broader health policy and practice regarding chronic respiratory disease management in India.
