Asthma Right Care update: September 2025

As the Asthma Right Care movement continues to develop and expand, we are pleased to share the latest updates from our country members after our most recent quarterly delivery team meetings in September 2025. Check our Asthma Right Care news feed for previous updates.

The group discussed a range of new and ongoing projects:
- A Desktop Helper is currently in development on asthma and mental health, building on the work done on COPD and mental health and addressing how anxiety affects adherence and quality of life. A working group has been formed to develop this resource with several delivery team members expressing an interest in contributing.
- The delivery team plans to deliver a webinar and produce a Desktop Helper on asthma and pregnancy, providing guidance on the use of inhaled medicines and oral steroids to manage asthma while pregnant.
- Country groups prepared to share stories of good practice in implementation in primary care settings, inspired by previous case studies.
- The delivery team discussed the results of an evaluation of Asthma Right Care, including enablers, barriers and what creates value.
- The team explored plans for IPCRG's upcoming World Conference in Tunisia in June 2026 and how to feature Asthma Right Care in the programme, with a particular focus on gamification.
- A paper and teaching pack on the asthma diagnosis jigsaw puzzle is nearing completion. The teaching pack will use examples from activity in North Macedonia, Malaysia and India and includes a step-by-step guide to running a workshop using the model, as well as guidance on communicating the diagnosis.
- Updates were provided on the development of an online escape room based on the asthma diagnosis jigsaw puzzle.
- A draft guide to organising an asthma walk (caminhasma) was shared and discussed.
Country updates

Country members were then invited to share updates on national activity:
Argentina
Colleagues in Argentina have initiated a national asthma campaign featuring doctors and Olympic athletes advising about asthma with the motto "Control asthma, control your life". Additionally, the rollout of Tier 3 Teach the Teacher continues in Jujuy province, north Argentina, in collaboration with the provincial health system and local government.
Brazil
Our Brazilian team is promoting Asthma Right Care at a number of key events. The group presented on Asthma Right Care and the role of pharmacists at a regional pharmacy summit, and will showcase successful practice at the Latin American Forum on Right Care for Asthma and COPD at the end of October, featuring a workshop developed with colleagues in Spain and Portugal. Brazil's 'asthma-friendly city' initiative is developing: in Guaralhos, the team are training healthcare professionals and planning expansion into further health regions, while in Joinville the municipal access protocol is being adjusted for people with asthma, developing care pathways and facilitating access to specialists at a local level.

Malaysia
Malaysian colleagues have led workshops highlighting Asthma Right Care. In May, they led a workshop with the Universiti Malaya faculty of medicine, training family medicine specialists, GPs, trainees and academics on the asthma diagnosis jigsaw puzzle. Further training was provided in Kuala Lumpur with a focus on Asthma Right Care materials, spirometry training and designing quality improvement plans for SABA-overreliant asthma patients. The group has developed a new resource adapting the slide rule to a wheel format to improve adherence to inhaled corticosteroids. From this engagement, the group reported an increased awareness of Asthma Right Care materials among clinicians and their increased use in clinical practice and research; from this the group is planning a new publication on the implementation of the slide rule in clinical practice.
Portugal
The Portuguese team led public caminhasmas (walks with asthma) across the country to mark World Asthma Day with the participation of Rosa Mota, an athlete with asthma who won a gold medal in the women's marathon at the 1988 Seoul Olympic games. These events were organised by local primary care centres and community pharmacists, and participants are publishing promotional videos of their walks. The team continues to develop their schools project, training teachers to help pupils with asthma manage their condition. Teachers are co-creating the project in each individual school and are currently producing videos to test their pupils' asthma awareness. Information is currently being collected through such exercises, and connections are being made with new schools.
