Asthma Right Care update: January 2026

27 Jan 2026

As our Asthma Right Care movement continues to grow deeper and broader, we are sharing updates from our country members following the latest quarterly delivery team meetings in December 2025, where members demonstrated their leadership and initiative in starting new conversations about what good quality asthma care looks like and how Asthma Right Care can deliver it.

Visit our Asthma Right Care news page for previous updates from our national teams.

General updates

The group began by discussing several new and ongoing projects:

  • An evaluation of Asthma Right Care is underway, with a focus on the value it adds
  • IPCRG colleagues are involved in an AstraZeneca webinar series with GINA and GAAPP on the implementation of guideline strategies
  • New work will begin on the relationship between pre-term birth and respiratory health, as well as a webinar on asthma and pregnancy
  • New resources are in development including a Desktop Helper on asthma and mental health, an interactive online version of the Slide Rule, and case studies on primary care strengthening
  • Plans are underway for an Asthma Right Care session at our upcoming 2026 World Conference

Country updates

Representatives of national Asthma Right Care groups then provided updates on their activities over the previous quarter:

Argentina

Argentinian colleagues continue to spread Asthma Right Care to more geographies and parts of the system alongside COPD Right Care, and are in talks with different societies and associations to develop new materials for primary care and to launch new programmes. Tier 3 Teach the Teacher continues to roll out across Tucumán and Jujuy provinces and the group is currently working with local stakeholders to launch in new provinces while preparing a publication on the preparatory and follow-up work involved with running Teach the Teacher.

The team has conducted workshops for around 150 primary care physicians on Right Care tools at the Argentine Society of Medicine’s Ibero-American Congress, and attended the 1st Ibero-American Forum on Asthma and COPD Care for Primary Health Care in Brazil alongside other IPCRG colleagues.

Brazil

The Brazilian team reflected on the successes of the 1st Ibero-American Forum on Asthma and COPD Care for Primary Health Care, attended by a number of IPCRG colleagues. Click here for a full report on the event. The event was attended by over 80 participants and featured an Asthma Right Care workshop with international participation.

Additionally, the ‘Asthma Friendly City’ programme developed further in the cities of Guarulhos and Joinville, which were granted ‘Second Star’ recognition for their efforts including collaborative care with pulmonologists, spirometry partnerships with industry, monitoring panels and multidisciplinary support groups.

India

Colleagues in India continue their work to engage pharmacists, and have initiated a situational analysis reviewed by others in the network. A new programme has been launched called UPHOLD (Upgrading Primary Healthcare in Obstructive Lung Diseases) which aims to engage primary care and deliver training using Asthma Right Care tools. Furthermore, members of the team in India are engaging in an asthma advocacy working group.

Kyrgyzstan

The Kyrgyzstan team reported on a successful Asthma Right Care seminar at the XIV National Congress of Respiratory Diseases in Bishkek, attended by family doctors, nurses and pharmacists. This involved the presentation and demonstration of IPCRG resources including the Slide Rule, Reliever Reliance Test and Question & Challenge Cards translated into Russian.

North Macedonia

North Macedonian colleagues successfully led ‘Let’s speak about asthma’ workshops in Tetovo, Skopje and Štip, which incorporated Asthma Right Care materials; Desktop Helper 18: Usefulness of Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) in Everyday Clinical Practice for Asthma was one of the newly translated materials presented. The group detailed a publication currently in review on asthma care in pharmacy settings.

New Zealand

The New Zealand team is currently engaged in the development of a white paper on a national respiratory strategy for New Zealand - this process has involved meeting with the Minister of Health, establishing a commissioning framework and undertaking a national audit of respiratory services to identify gaps in care.

Portugal

The team in Portugal is currently preparing a practical asthma guide for nurses in primary care as well as a CaminhAsma promotional video. An “Asthma and pregnancy” webinar is currently in development and due for delivery in Spring 2026; it will be initially aimed at primary care but may be adapted for pregnant women in the future.

The group continues to experiment with gamification, a key educational priority. Colleagues are spreading the word about their ‘Asthma Escape Room’ model, which was recently presented at an event in Porto; participants are being encouraged to take this model to their own units, and the team is exploring accreditation before further dissemination.

Slovenia

Slovenian colleagues detailed a new workshop on understanding and treating dyspnea, incorporating guidance on differential diagnosis for family doctors, practical tips for preventing and managing asthma exacerbations, and a modern approach to treating a patient with problematic and severe asthma. Over 350 participants attended, including doctors, nurses and pharmacists.

Tunisia

Our Tunisian team participated in the 3rd congress of the Tunisian Society of Clinical Pharmacy, promoting Asthma Right Care with a focus on the role of community pharmacists in the therapeutic education of asthmatic patients.

United Kingdom

Our UK colleagues have recently run a practical webinar on implementing AIR and MART therapy in children, young people and adults, including tools such as an AIR Asthma Action Plan as well as a redeveloped online Asthma Slide Rule.
